Supermarket Sweep

Today kids, we’re going on a shopping spree, to see the everyday items that have a direct link with the Stock Market.

When getting into the world of investing, especially if it’s your first dabbl, its key to first get a basic understanding of just how much actually resides on the Stock Market. At a glance, the market can contain a number of companies you’ve probably never heard of – but with a little bit of research – and a little bit of a dedication to the cause – you may find you may know a few of them a lot better than you think.

This week, we’ll start with the heart of the home – The Kitchen.

Now let’s start from the top. Those cupboards don’t just fill themselves every week, do they? Oh no. Whether you’re an old-school shopper or a new age ‘internet delivery’ kinda person, there is a level of effort that must be made – and the Stock Market is very much a part of that process.

Enter the Supermarket – all of the below are fully investable;

Tesco PLC

J Sainsbury

Morrisons

Walmart (who own ASDA)

Costco, whose cakes are just marvellous

And even McColls, for those last minute dash and grabs

Now it’s important at this stage, particularly as an investor, to think about the various cogs that need to turn to keep these supermarkets running. After all, if any of these cogs decide to stop, the supermarket might not be feeling quite so super, and as a result, neither may the Stock price;

Sysco Corp

A delivery firm that transport goods to manufacturers nationwide

Devro PLC

Manufactures the casings that your food actually comes in

So you’ve done the shop, you’ve driven home and now you’re at the door, playing the ‘how many carrier bags can I fit onto one wrist?’ game.

But first things first, let’s get the kettle on;

Unilever

PG Tips

Nestle

Nescafe

Not sweet enough?

Tate & Lyle

Sugar & Sweetener

Still not sweet enough?

Premier Foods PLC

Mr Kipling cakes

Break time can’t last forever – it’s time to get the unpacking done. Here are a few of our own personal faves, along with the company that owns them – all of whom are ready and raring to be invested in on the Stock Marchet.

(Everyone knows you unpack the frozen stuff first – so why change now?)

Unilever

Carte D’or

Ben & Jerrys

Walls

Vienetta

Nomad Foods Ltd

Birds Eye

(If you can freeze it, they’ve frozen it)

Then, it’s onto the fridge;

Dairy Crest Group PLC

Cathedral City cheese

Unilever

Flora margarine

Hellmanns Mayonnaise

Colmans Mustard

The Kraft & Heinz company

Heinz Ketchup

PepsiCo Inc

Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice

Copella Apple Juice

Danone SA

Activia Yoghurts

All this unpacking is thirsty work! Time to crack open a cold one. What’s on offer we hear you cry?

Coca Cola Co

Good ol’ fashioned Coca Cola

Remember it never hurts to think outside the box, and here is a perfect example:

Coca Cola HBC Ltd

The company that make Coca-Cola bottles

Diageo PLC

Smirnoff (it’s five o’clock somewhere right?)

Britvic PLC

Fruit Shoots

Robinsons fruit squash

J20

Last but not least;

Fevertree Drinks PLC

Fevertree

Phew, we can relax a tad now the cold items are away – but not too much, here’s a few of our favourite dry goods;

Campbell Soup PLC

Campbell soups

Associated British Foods PLC

Ryvita

Procter & Gamble

Pringles

Archer Daniels Midland Company

Nuts and Seeds

General Mills Inc

Cheerios

Nature Valley cereal bars

Kelloggs Co

Cornflakes

Associated British Foods PLC

Twinings teabags

Unilever

Pataks Sauce

Now it can’t just be us – all that graft is very tiring work. Can’t quite be bothered to cook? Enter the takeaway;

Just Eat

Yum Foods

KFC & Pizza Hut

Dominoes PLC

So there we have it, what everyday kitchen items have a direct link with the Stock Market? Pretty much everything but the sink.
